You do have to hand it to Yami, he DOES know how to ride that line. There's nobody better at it: getting his life points down to nothing and then sitting tight in order to turn his luck right on its head. Jonouchi really is learning from the best, but he's still at an apprentice level yet. Mastery is still a long ways away for him, and even then, Yami's level in the skill is godlike. Seriously, if he were in a literal competition of running on the edge (think Assassin's Creed shit), he would inevitably have the ability to stand on walls in order to beat opponents.

That's supposed to be a pretty difficult thing to do. Kids with the money and time often go on trips around the world lasting for months to figure themselves out. Adults spend years going through various careers, friends, families, and spouses, scratching their heads the whole way. Hell, this blog is my first proud internet undertaking, having run through a long string of pseudonyms and identities to try and find my place, and that's just ONLINE.

And we're expecting Yami to do it in the course of a single duel? Yeah. Right.

Seriously? Am I going to have to just copy and paste the last chapter's cold open into this one? To be fair, this one isn't so much specifying MAI beautiful as it is the trap, but what about this trap is beautiful? It involves that Mirror Wall, so perhaps Yami's MONSTERS are the ones being referred to here. Or perhaps Yami himself? Wouldn't THAT be something?

Haven't we already been over this? First she's a siren without exhibiting any of the singing or distracting characteristics of one to our protagonists, and now we're calling her bewitching? She had better be playing a spell card that warrants this description during this chapter, or I'm going to be annoyed. Chapters need to stop referring to Mai in ways that are reminiscent of sexist descriptions of female allure, ESPECIALLY when they're not even relevant.

Because this first page isn't very promising on the relevancy front.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN, READERS! This is my absolute favorite holiday, and has been ever since I was a child, for a combination of various reasons. I have many positive memories around this time of year. I love fall in its entirety, with its mild days and cool nights. I love the iconography, the symbols, that encourage one to reflect on one's mortality and the more frightening aspects of life. I love the ability to face those symbols by becoming one of them, by putting on a mask and stepping into those shoes to explore the darker side of our psyches.

And, of course, I love walking around in the night, blending with the shadows while I search for adventure and fun.

Honda is searching for something quite different, though.

On this, the eve of our glory, we raise our glass to all those that will be lost on the morrow! Fear not death, for you shall be honored upon your fall on the battlefield in the hereafter, and your story will be sung by all generations to come. They will sing of your courage, your bravery, your conviction in the face of the enemy, and will praise you for your great sacrifice! The sacrifice of your precious monster cards for FREEDOM!

Besides, they'll probably be brought back with Monster Reborn or something anyway.

Which one? There are an awful lot of them in this comic. We talking about the promise that Yuugi/Yami will beat Pegasus and save Sugoroku from having to live out the rest of his life in a video camera? The promise that Yuugi/Yami will face Mai in the tournament finals? The promise that Kaiba would save Mokuba from Pegasus? Well, that last one was a bust. Maybe there will be MORE promises?

I received an email a couple of days ago, informing me that today is a very important day. A very auspicious day, according to a character guide for this manga world. And how lucky am I, to be able to cover a chapter featuring the character that this day celebrates the birth of. I'm talking, of course, about Seto Kaiba's birthday, which I am recognizing with some confusion. I mean, I can understand why KT would come up with this information as part of an authorial process, just to know everything about the character he was creating. But... what use does anyone ELSE have for this information? Why was it published in a book? Why would I ever need to know that Kaiba is just over 6 foot tall, or that he's 150ish pounds (the skinny fucking bastard), or that his blood type is 'A'? It doesn't appear to have any bearing on the story, but, you know... good for him?

So, Mr. Kaiba, with many shrugs, I present to you this birthday gift: a series of Who Framed Roger Rabbit jokes at the expense of your opponent in this duel. I was going to make them anyway, but I may as well relabel them for the occasion. Happy birthday, you magnificent son of a bitch.

I was expecting Pegasus to be featured on the title page for this one, considering he has a castle on his Duelist Kingdom island, and it has been indicated with a very out-of-place panel in the last chapter that he even has himself a nice throne... I WASN'T expecting this:

Are those anything like the stages of grief? Emotional states that indicate how a person moves THROUGH fear? Or are we talking about physical indicators of fear, like bugged eyes, constricted pupils, shallow breathing, screaming, that sort of thing? Since it's the season of fear, especially around the subject of death, I'd like to see what these stages are supposed to look like, and if there's a haunted house nearby with a progression meant to stimulate all these different stages. THAT would be pretty cool.

Please, YES. Let's get this show on the road, already, because we've been heading for the castle for quite a few chapters now, and I'm getting kind of antsy. That's not even counting the whole tournament up until this point, with the goal of getting into the finals. I'm talking since Yuugi/Yami and company left the caves and got into this whole kerfuffle with Kaiba. Let's GO already. Emerald City is RIGHT THERE, this yellow brick road is at an end. GET IN THERE.

The kind of courage it takes to face oneself and the limitations we are prone to? Or maybe the courage to confront those parts that don't appear to be limited in the ways we would prefer? Or perhaps the courage to tell that dick next door to stop hammering on his walls like he's trying to knock them down. I mean for fuck's sake, this is an apartment building, and some of us are trying to sleep at 2 am, you know??

That's too bad, because Yami needs all the mercy he can get if he keeps betting his life on freaking cards. I swear, the boy does it at every available opportunity. It's like he has a death wish, but he can't seem to get it across in any other way. It must make it doubly complicated that, if he's a spirit that came from the puzzle (not a part of Yuugi all along), he's not exactly alive. He's sharing a body with Yuugi, after all, and he's already said that if one of them dies they both do.

Guys, what if Yami just hates Yuugi and wants someone to kill them both?

And before you ask, yes. Yes, it's fucking AWFUL living in my head.

Just in case you were doubting that Yami is having some trouble here, this title should set you straight. It also kind of rules out him pulling one of those miraculous victories from his ass like he usually does, too. Not that I really wanted him to, mind you. Not when I'm actually INVESTED in one of his duels for once. That shit just wouldn't fly right now, because Yami is WAY past due on his fair share of character suffering.

Why does my saying that leave a nasty taste in my mouth?

Oh. Oh shit. It's because I sound like THIS asshole.

Only three more days until Friday, friends! Just a LITTLE longer! Then it's off to the bar with your work friends to discuss how much HELL the week was while kicking back a few shots and trying not to worry about what Monday is going to be like. Or, rather, trying not to worry about what the next duel is going to be like, in Yami's case. He's probably going to need as hefty a drink after all this is over as any office monkey.

But they're ALL close fights, chapter! This isn't a distinguishing feature! Isn't there anything else you can name yourself after that isn't a tension design as common as WATER? Maybe a new monster or cool move? A comment from one of the attending cheer squad? Kaiba making another bromantic admission that reveals just how badly he wants to make love to Yami? Come on, get creative here!!!

Not THAT creative.

As is the pattern of most battles, and most duels we've seen, for that matter. It's an ebb and flow that attempts to make the winner a bit less obvious. Yami will go into this thing, guns blazing, then he'll have to back up and try the thing from a new angle, and then the big comeback commences. I mean, the comeback isn't in the chapter title, but we can very well expect it. That's the formula, right?

Take a good look at that number up there and rejoice! This is the 100th chapter of Yu-Gi-Oh, and my 100th review for this manga specifically! Another party in the house! Sure, it was only last month that I had my 100th general review party, but you can never have too many 100th review parties, guys. Besides, I've already got wine and sweets for the occasion. A sweet blackberry number and some chocolate bourbon pecan pie.

What last piece? Everybody's already got their star chips and they're headed for the castle. What's left to get? Don't tell me Pegasus wants the finalists to go on a quest to find the ingredients for some obscure videogame-like recipe. DON'T tell me that they get to the door only for that Secret Service Servant to tell them they need to head to the Middle Eastern market to get grated filo dough and rose/orange water to make a ritual knafeh or something.

Although, knafeh sounds freaking amazing right now.

That means no flipping coins, boys! Just because there are only two choices doesn't mean you can just play a game of Eenie-Meenie and get a fair result. But the most important rule to choosing wisely is not playing to expectations. "The Door of the Palace" might sound like the obvious choice, and that's exactly why you SHOULDN'T pick it. Never forget the mistake of that Nazi guy in Indiana Jones, kids.
